THE CASE OF THE LAZY LOVER. (1947). Erle Stanley Gardner. ****.On the ffep of this edition, there is a blurb in caps: “The Only Author Who Outsells Agatha Christie, Harold Robbins, Barbara Cartland, and Louis L’Amour Combined.” They could probably thrown in T. S. Eliot and Anthony Trollope, too, and still have been correct. I’m not sure what the thrust of such statements is, but It’s likely to be someone who hasn’t read any of the Perry Mason novels and is embarrassed into doing so. Anyway… this novel – an earlty one from Gardner – is about greed. A giant of industry discovers that his wife has run off with a younger man, a man who had been one of his most trusted employees. He hires Mason to find her. Mason has his reservations, but takes on the task. Then he receives two checks, drawn on two different banks, each for $2,500, and both from the wife in question. Confused, Mason now has to find out if the missing wife wants him to represent him, or if he should just go with the husband. Confusing! Especially so when dead bodies begin showing up. This is a well-constructed plot with a few difficult red herrings thrown in to add some spice. Recommended.
