About book The Candy Bombers (2008)

A few weeks ago I asked my friends for recommendations of WWII books I should read and this one was at the top of the list. It's long, and not necessarily an easy read, but the author does a fantastic job explaining post-war politics and the events surrounding the Berlin Air Lift. He weaves the personal experience of living in Berlin or flying planes in the late 1940s to give the political talk perspective and makes you appreciate what people on all sides-politicians, Russians, pilots, and Berliners were going through. This was a wonderful book to read. I learned a great deal about the post- WWII years and the significant history of which I was previously rather unaware. The actual role of the candy bombers in the midst of the Berlin Airlift added such an important human element. So much of the outcome could have been very different and I am proud of the way the USA held it's ground. I highly recommend this book.
