About book The Candidates (Delcroix Academy, #1) (2010)

You know when you read one of those books and you like it, but you're not sure why, or you feel like nothing of substance happened? Yeah, that's this book.Nothing happened in this book. Only HINTS of what could happen did. All throughout this book it was based on three central characters - the main character and her two possible love interests. And, even though hints of an actual plot sometimes touched the surface - nothing ever did. Even as I write this (about three weeks after I finished it) I still feel kind of shocked about how this book was written. It feels like this should have been a middle book. The only thing that saved this from being a total disaster for me was the writing style. I loved Dancia's, the main character, voice. Although, I must admit that I felt like slapping her when she had to have derogatory thoughts about someone she thought was better than her. And, I will go on to read the sequel, because that 'hint of a plot' keeps drawing me in. I want to see if something happens or if it will continue to be nothing more than a love triangle with 'bits of a plot' thrown in. This is one of my favorite books of 2010! I loved the characters, the storyline and the writing.Dancia is an awesome name. She also makes for an interesting character. Her choices are realistic and I felt like I knew her.Normally, I don't have any trouble taking sides in a love triangle, but this one is tough. Jack and Cam are total opposites and I really wanted each of them for myself... I mean, for Dancia. There is a little bit of mystery to them both and I am curious to see what the next book uncovers. This book is layered with suspense. It killed me not to know what was going on, why things were happening, and who was behind what. I wanted to peek ahead to see what Scott was building up to, but I prevented myself from doing so. I waited patiently and everything was revealed in time. She wraps up the first book nicely and left me desperately needing the next one. I really wish I had read this book sooner, but I am also glad I waited because now I do not have to wait as long for the next one.I would have loved to see more of the grandma. There is just something about her that leads me to believe she knows more than she is letting on. She always seems to know just what to say and at the same time is vague and gives nothing away. The Candidates was a refreshing read that I enjoyed immensely. If you haven't read it yet, I suggest asking for it for Christmas or braving the holiday traffic for a copy of your own. You will not be disappointed :)
