About book The Buddha And The Borderline: My Recovery From Borderline Personality Disorder Through Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Buddhism, And Online Dating (2010)

I've never wanted to be done with a book before as much as I did with this one. It's not that this was terrible, aside from the several typos (they happen to all of us), I just couldn't get myself to 'like' Kiera very much. I understand bpd, I just couldn't relate to being so helpless and needing others to take care of you, financially, to the extent that she needed everyone. I do wish she spoke more about her time as an alcoholic and drug addict and her life before the time of her diagnosis. Perhaps she'll write another memoir. I also wish she wrote more about Buddhism and not when she had one foot in and one foot out. That part felt very short and incomplete. All in all I'd say 3 stars. Not terrible. Not great. . This was a great introduction to BPD for me. Not only does Van Gelder tell the story of her diagnosis and struggles with BPD, she gives brief descriptions of the disorder, DBT, and how the world reacts to it. Though she admits that she still struggles and probably always will, there's a message of hope that those with BPD can cling to, the hope that someone with this disorder can have some semblance of a regular life. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone struggling with this disorder.
