A memoir of growing up as a Mexican American in Brownsville, Texas. I don't recommend this one. There was not one decent person in the whole family. The author just tells stories which fuel Mexican stereotypes and obviously dislikes his race. The worst part was the Spanish phrases which were poorly translated and not grammatically correct..."bien" instead of "ven"....."lla" which I think is meant to mean "ya".....really?....I guess it is his way to prove to his readers how "white" he really is. An inside look at life in the barrio in a border town in Texas. The author notes in a number of sections of the book he sees a therapist. After reading about his life growing up it is amazing he doesn't spend everyday in therapy. Throughout the story the author is somehow able to keep a sense of humor as he describes his stewed up extensive family, what is considered normal for him is nearly impossible to believe. This was a great story, of an amazing man.
Started strong, but by the end I was skimming pages just wanting it to over already.
