About book The Book Of Killoween (2000)

I have to say Erin Hart's writing reminded me of Ariana Frankilin, so lyrical and intellectual. I was pulled into a foreign world so filled with mystery and knowledge. Since recently I just finished Elly Griffiths book so I hope this book would not be similar. Thank goodness it didn't. It didn't have the romanticism nor the heroism . However it did still contain the cliche of all detective, a ruined sacrificed or ignored family. Hence I didn't like the ending. Thought it came out of no where.I would also like the story a little more intense and taut. This one I would consider a cozy mystery. The Book of Killowen is the first Erin Hart novel I’ve read; it won’t be the last. I especially enjoyed the prologue, which harkened back to a centuries old murder committed on the Irish bogs. Killowen is filled with lots of interesting characters doing lots of interesting things. The prologue's ancient murder is quickly eclipsed by another, present day crime, and we are off and running through verdant country where suspects abound. Practically everyone had a reason to see the victim dead and Hart does an excellent job spinning out some particularly fine cloth. Along the way the reader learns about medieval manuscripts and their provenance. From vellum to eel ink to oak galls and more, Killowen is an excellent read. Erin Hart has done some serious research in the creation of this lovely tome. Each section begins with quotes and poems from long dead, anonymous scribes (who I hope I have the opportunity to meet someday). Ha! For now, I’ll have to settle for their words (and most especially Hart’s).

An interesting murder mystery with a bit of history to boot in Ireland.
