Bohaterką książki o tym jakże wydumanym tytule jest Rebeka Martinsson, z zawodu prawniczka. Poznajemy ją w chwili, gdy przeżywa trudne chwile; otóż okazuje się, że ma na sumieniu życie ludzkie. Tamte wydarzenia opisuje debiutancka powieść pisarki, o jeszcze bardziej nieciekawym tytule: “Burza z krańców ziemi”, jednak na chwilę obecną książka ta nie jest w naszym kraju dostępna pod postacią ebooka, zatem trzeba zacząć od tomu drugiego.Rebeka jest, nie ma sensu owijać w bawełnę, w rozsypce. Od dawna nie brała czynnego udziału w żadnej sprawie, w całości pochłania ją ona sama, jej własna osoba, oddalająca się od poczytalności, wędrująca w nieciekawe, groźne zakamarki depresji. W końcu jednak, po części w wyniku swoich zamierzeń, a po części dzięki tak zwanemu łutowi (nie)szczęścia trafia ponownie w rejon Kiruny - najbardziej na północ wysuniętego miasta Szwecji, w kraju geograficznym bezpośrednio sąsiadującym z Laponią, w okolicach kręgu polarnego.Jak to w życiu bywa, następuje przedziwny splot wydarzeń. Na miejscu wciąż trwa śledztwo, poszukiwanie mordercy, który w dość okrutny sposób pozbawił życia lokalnej pastor, kobiety mocno i konkretnie denerwującej wszystkich dookoła. Także czytelnika, bowiem w książce mamy cały szereg niedługich wtrąceń będących retrospekcjami, będzie nam zatem dane całkiem dobre poznanie pastor i jej wybuchowej, pełnej nieskrywanego feminizmu osobowości.Rebeka ani przez chwilę nie myśli o jakimkolwiek zaangażowaniu w sprawę. Przecież nawet nie jest prawniczką śledczą, nie bierze spraw karnych, zajmuje się szeroko rozumianym biznesem. Poza tym jej depresja nie pozwala na dostrzeżenie wszystkiego, co się dzieje wokół. Aż do czasu.“Krew, która nasiąkła” to książka specyficzna, a sposób, w jaki autorka kreuje wydarzenia zdecydowanie odstaje od typowych kryminałów, zresztą nie tylko tych skandynawskich. Trzeba jednak dać się w opowieść wciągnąć i pozwolić pani Larsson wędrować od postaci, do postaci, od wydarzenia, do kolejnego. Po pewnym czasie czytelnik zaczyna zdawać sobie sprawę, że tak naprawdę ten kryminał w niewielkim stopniu zajmuje się samym morderstwem. Znacznie lepiej przedstawiona jest postać zmarłej oraz mieszkańcy miasteczka, ich codzienne dramaty, zwykłe życie, które nawet w tej mlekiem i miodem płynącej (zdawałoby się) Skandynawii jest równie brutalne i pełne grozy jak w innych rejonach świata. Strona za stroną, nagle uświadamiamy sobie, że tak naprawdę nie jest ważne kto zabił, ani nawet z jakiego powodu - a przynajmniej nie bezpośrednio, nie jest to informacja najcenniejsza. To nie hollywood, gdzie na końcu muszą być fajerwerki, zakładnicy, rozbrojenie bomby na sekundę przed wybuchem. Tu nawet nie zejdą się dawni małżonkowie czy kochankowie. Autorce chodzi o coś innego, o coś, co niejednemu czytelnikowi nie da spokoju. O pokazanie, że happy end nie istnieje, a gotowe rozwiązania wszelkich kłopotów są domeną pisarzy słabych i nie znających życia (nie wiem czemu na myśl przychodzi mi przede wszystkim Camilla Läckberg oraz około mnóstwa pisarek z USA?). Bólu nie można uniknąć, nie można nawet się na niego przygotować: i tak przyjdzie w najmniej spodziewanym momencie i dokona spustoszenia we wnętrzu człowieka.A jednak można żyć dalej.Także szczerze mówiąc: bezmiar depresji, takiej codziennej, życiowej, bardzo realistycznej obecny w tej pozycji natychmiast kazał mi dokupić resztę książek tej autorki. Dawno nie odczuwałem takiego zmieszania, dawno nic mnie tak nie wgniotło w sofę, jak końcówka “Krwi, która nasiąkła”. Ostatni raz to czułem, gdy zaczynałem przygodę z książkami Håkana Nessera, który jest moim ulubionym przykładem pisarza (prawie) doskonałego. Trzymam kciuki, by następne książki pani Larsson były równie realistyczne i tak samo prawdziwe. Wierzę, że mogą takimi być nawet mimo tych egzaltowanych tytułów :)
Stockholm lawyer Rebecka Martinsson is still suffering from PTSD after the events of Larsson's previous novel, Sun Storm, but nonetheless decides to take a short vacation in the far-north region where those events played out. Had she realized that there'd been a more recent murder there, this time of a female priest, she might have thought twice, but . . .Once again the cops Anna-Maria and Sven-Erik are on the case. Although Rebecka does help them in the early stages, really her involvement with the case is peripheral . . . or so it seems until the book's final, bloody climax.In a sense, this isn't a mystery novel at all. The identification of the killer comes about not through deduction but through a piece of luck and some straightforward police work thereafter. After a hundred pages or so of dissatisfaction -- where, if anywhere, was this going? -- I finally cottoned on that Larsson wasn't really much interested in the mystery aspects: instead, she's focusing on building up the character of the murdered priest, Mildred, and the difficulties that a backward rural community, split largely along gender lines between often brutal ultra-conservatives and ordinary people, had in absorbing her energies and her reluctance to suffer fools. This aspect Larsson deals with very well, as she does with Rebecka's slow progress back toward mental stability, unwittingly aided by denizens of the Last Stop Diner: Micke and Mimmi (whose names made me think of certain Disney characters!) and the retarded but enormously good-willed Nalle, who becomes Rebecka's great pal.But there are other aspects that seem less competently tackled. Mimmi's mom, Lisa, was having a clandestine affair with Mildred. Now, consumed with grief, she's destroying all the aspects of her old life -- burning her furniture, getting rid of her books, etc. It's clear to us that she's suffering a breakdown, but her next-to-final act -- she takes her troop of much-beloved dogs to the vet and has them put down -- just doesn't seem to ring true. First, what dog lover would actually do this? Second, what vet would agree to perform the massacre? All in all, Lisa's story seems not to come to any logical conclusion, just to end; and I was left wondering why it was there at all. Again, the circumstances leading up to the book's second murder seem contrived; we've spent quite a lot of time in the head of that murder's victim and have seen no evidence of the knowledge we suddenly, after his death, discover he supposedly had that made him so dangerous to Mildred's killer.As with the earlier book, I found this slow to get moving, although in part this may have been because I was expecting it to be a mystery rather than a layered portrayal of a society and one of its square pegs. I was also, early on, puzzled at best about the interpolated sections describing the adventures of the wolf Yellow Legs, although I came to enjoy these too. All in all, a bit of a mixed verdict.

Poor Rebecka Martinsson - how much more can this character take? At one point in the book I became almost angry with the author for taking an already damaged person and putting her in another horrifying situation. But it works - and unlike many characters, Rebecka is not "strong in spite of it all" or anything similarly girl-power-y. She's a total mess, which feels realistic (well, as realistic as a murder-mystery novel will ever feel). I also love the style of writing - going from one character to another and switching just as something happens so that you can hardly stop yourself from flipping ahead to see what happens... good stuff. Great plot twists, too - I was guessing till the end.

Mais uma vez não fiquei desiludida com Åsa Larsson. Depois de Aurora Boreal, livro que já tinha lido anteriormente e que tinha adorado, parti com grandes expectativas para este Sangue Derramado e estas foram largamente superadas. Sequela de Aurora Boreal, aconselho os estreantes de Åsa Larsson a lerem o primeiro livro antes deste, até porque a personagem principal Rebecka Martinsson volta novamente a estar em destaque na resolução dos homicídios que vão surgir na pequena localidade de Kiruna.Figura polémica e, como tal, gerando relações de amor/ódio pela maior parte da população Mildred Nilsson, pastora daquela localidade é encontrada barbaramente assassinada. Bertil Stensson e Stefan Wikstron, pároco e sacerdote respectivamente, são os primeiros suspeitos da polícia visto terem criado inimizades com a pastora que poderiam levar ao seu afastamento e consequente morte. Mas será que é algum deles o assassino? Não seria demasiado óbvio? Ou muitas vezes o óbvio é que leva a que se afastem as suspeitas do leitor perante eles?Pelo caminho surge ainda Lisa, que mostra ter tido uma relação bastante próxima com a vítima...Os já conhecidos Rebecka (advogada) e Anna-Maria Mella e Sven-Erik Stalnacke (polícias) voltam a estar na investigação do crime e mais uma vez esta investigação torna-se numa experiência traumática para Rebecka. Estou curiosa para ler o próximo volume.

Author Asa Larsson won Sweden’s Best First Crime Novel Award for her mystery, Sun Storm. I found her second effort, The Blood Spilt, on the Library’s New Fiction shelves. The main character, Rebecka Martinsson is a tax attorney recovering from events that occurred in the first book (she shot several people in order to save some children….or so I gathered). She gets pulled into the death of a murdered female priest that is being investigated by team leader Anna-Maria Mella, just back from maternity leave, and fellow officer Sven-Erik Stalnacke. The characters surrounding Mildred Nilsson, the priest, are examined and followed in great depth. Particularly memorable are a young man with the mind of a child and good friend who lives with her five (or is it six?) dogs. The setting — rural northern Sweden– is as important as any character. The connection to nature is also highlighted by a narrative inserted periodically about the life of a local wolf, Yellow Legs. At times this seems to throw the story off, at other times it fits right in. All in all, a very literary and successful story with a mystery that kept me changing my mind almost to the end, and characters that I will remember for a long time. --SusanFrom ICPL Staff Picks Blog
