About book The Big Rewind: A Memoir Brought To You By Pop Culture (2009)
Please don't let the three star review fool you, there is a lot to love and recommend of Nathan Rabin's memoir which fuses recollection with pop culture obsessions. The parts I found most entertaining were towards the end with his discussion of the show Movie Club, which fuels some of his best digressions and rants. I have loved Nathan's writing on the AV Club, and he is still killing it on the Dissolve now, so I was happy to finally track down one of his books. Good stuff. Standard Issue Pop Culture references abound. At this point, Catcher in the Rye and Nirvana references/thematic essay ice breakers are more like American History, not edgy pop culture fist pumping. This coupled with repeated SAT words and self described "biting sarcasm", I am impressed this guy has a job as a writer. The pithy, abbreviated chapters leave much to be desired for. Exposition is a word he could write his next literary handjob about, except I doubt I would read it.
