About book The Bachelors Of Broken Hill (1998)

One after another, elderly bachelors are being poisoned, and Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte is sent to Broken Hill to get to find out who is committing the murders, and why. His child-of-both-worlds personality and outlook and his unconventional methods of detection arouse the curiosity of everyone who meets him or learns of him through others. Ultimately thesebecome the tools that the inspector uses to solve the case. All the victims had in common was the fact that none of them had ever married, and had a tendency to gobble their food, making for messy clothing. Bony, the Inspector, uses hypnosis to coax witnesses to remember clues. Barmaids, burglars, and a magician all come forth to provide clues to this intriguing whodunnit. The author keeps listeners guessing until the last minute of this oddly fascinating mystery. In his chronicles of Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte, a genius forensic expert working for Australian police and courts who is the scion of an aboriginal mother and a white father left on the steps of a Roman Catholic orphanage as an infant, has created an unsurpassed portrait of Australia in all its glory and horror. All of Upfields novels in this magnificent series are worth collecting and reading. Though earlier examples do show prejudices that white Australians once held about the aborigenes, beginning with the third or fourth novel in the series a much more empathic and balanced approach to white-aboriginal relations becomes evident. And throughout these novels showcase Australia and Australians in a way that makes you suspect that the true central character of the series is Australia itself. The perfect cure for boredom and other ills of the spirit.

The Bachelors of Broken Hill is the fourteenth book in the popular Bony series by Arthur Upfield. After two cyanide poisonings in the outback town of Broken Hill have left the local police and a Detective Inspector from Sydney baffled, Bony consents to take the case. Both victims are elderly bachelors with a tendency to spill food on their clothes, although Bony is the first to concede this is not a killing offence. In both cases, a tall, older lady was at the scene, but descriptions of the possible poisoner are, at best, vague. While Bony is investigating, a third poisoning takes place, followed by the stabbing of a female police constable. In this instalment, Bony employs the use of a sketch artist, a journalist and a burglar hoping to escape notice away from the city. There is a blue bag with a red drawstring, a baby’s dummy, a glass knife, a black tracker, a stooping customer and a fugitive magician. While Bony may , at times sound slightly arrogant regards his skills, he always gives credit where it is due and is happy to praise the hard-working local constabulary. Another masterpiece of detection.
