About book The Athena Effect (2000)

I enjoyed this book. I was expecting a book about mythical creatures and I was pleasantly disappointed.I think the love story was the best part about this book. The courtship was very exciting. It wasn't too fast and the writier really took her time threading their interactions together cohesively. So Cal is raised in the woods with her parents who have seizures intermittently. They live off the land, no electricity or school. They are recluses. She can see what others are feeling through their auras. And she can manipulate them as well. Her parents warn her before they die in a car accident that she can't trust anyone with her power. After her parents die she is sent to live with a aunt and has to go to school for the first time. There she meets Cal. Yes, they have similar names. And so it begins. I would hate to spoil it for you so I will leave it at that. This book is part of a series, but honestly I think you could read it as a stand alone as well. No cliffhanger endings for this one. Enjoy! I was completely surprised by where this plot went, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. As a side note, I love the fact that a female losing her virginity wasn't a big deal; it just happened in the natural course of the plot, without there being any sirens or flashing neon lights. The plot had more important things to focus on, and sex simply played into the development of character relationships.
