About book The Atheist's Guide To Christmas (2010)

This book, a collection of short pieces by various atheists, goes to show that not all atheists hate all things religious. While these authors definitely do not believe in god, most all of them like, even enjoy, different parts of Christmas. These parts include family, peace and goodwill, music, decorations, entertaining, and an all around jovial attitude. The book would not be on one of my top lists of atheist books; it still entertains and informs. Really interesting and fun collection of stories and essays which talks about different aspects of Christmas from a secular point of view. (There are also sections about peoples experience of celebrating Christmas whilst being Jewish and Pagan). A particular highlight for me is the philosophy section and in it Derren Brown's chapter on kindness and forgiveness in relation to Christmas. A lot of the entries are written by comedians so its a very funny and varied collection which would make a really good holiday gift, (also 50% of the profit of the book goes to the Terrance Higgins trust which is an absolutely fantastic charity).
