About book The Art Of Manliness: Classic Skills And Manners For The Modern Man (2009)

I loved this book. I wish I could force every single beibertard I pass to read it. Excellent advice throughout, I hope my daughters use this measurement of a "real man" to pick their future husbands.Books that interest me in a subject enough to cause me to look it up always get bonus points and I found myself jotting more that one "look this up" reminder. The narrator did an excellent job.If I have any problem with the book it's in the chapter suggesting civic duty and encouraging men to give back to their community. I agree with those ideas whole heartedly, but the chapter is kicked off with a statement about how some people are born with a disadvantage. The only people that are born with a disadvantage are people who believe they've been born with a disadvantage. The Art of Manliness by Brett McKay and his wife was pretty good. It had a very boy-scout-manual feel to it. It should only be considered a reference book. In other words, it is hard to read straight through. Although I felt like this book had some invaluable information, it was also quite lacking and occasionally I didn't not agree with the authors. For example, I didn't agree with the author's opinion on dating and marriage. Their opinion that "people seldom change", so a man shouldn't waste time on a woman who's not just right (p. 54). Personally, I believe that nobody is perfect and some men are lucky to have any woman at all. Also, I believe people change all the time. The book was filled with odd "old-time phrases and expressions" that were sometimes hard to understand. I suppose there's a reason people don't use these words anymore. Unfortunately, I didn't think they also fit very well in this book. For example, who is Emily Post? Also, what are "drumstick cases"? And what does "throw up the sponge" mean? To be fair, all of these expressions are explained in the back- it was just annoying to have go to the back every now and then. All in all, I like the information in this book so much- I'm considering purchasing this one. So, yes- The Art of Manliness is definitely worth checking out.
