The only reason I got through this book is because I listened to it on audio, and even then it turned out to be a total Hate Listen. Another GoodReads reviewer compared the heroine to a venus flytrap and OMG - she TOTALLY is! She's constantly described as "fragile" and "delicate" and she's one of those idiot heroines who make men go insane with lust and rage. The hero falls in love with her totally out of left field (for the record, I love romance in my mysteries but, you know, laying some groundwork would have been nice). The ending of the book is one "shocking reveal" after another. They did it! No they did it! It was done for that reason! No that reason! No wait! THIS IS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED! Ugh.Narration note: Simon Vance has narrated his fair share of audiobooks and he does an OK job with the descriptive passages and the hero. But every single secondary character sounds like the Cartoon Version Of An English Accent. The coroner character in particular (who is described as "corpulent") is read in an awful, jowl-quivering manner. The only reason this escapes one star is because I did keep listening - but now I'm wondering why I did. I found this book to be an interesting read.. Tessa Harris takes the reader into the early sciences of forensics and anatomy/physiology. Dr Thomas Silkstone, recently from the Colonies, has been consulted for an autopsy. The dead man, Sir Edward Crick, leaves behind a grieving sister and a brother in law who has an excellent motive for murder. His sister, Lydia, finds herself drawn to Thomas despite her best efforts (doubtful) to remain loyal to her husband. To be quite frank, suspend any logic or rationale thinking while reading this book. Forensics do not really solve much in this book, but the author makes efforts for inclusion of this field in the storyline. The main characters are not entirely believable in their appropriateness and development for the time period. All in all, it is a fanciful read that ought not to be taken as a serious book.
Do You like book The Anatomist's Apprentice (2012)?
Good intro to characters. Interesting storyline. I look forward to other books in this series.
