About book The $100 Startup: Reinvent The Way You Make A Living, Do What You Love, And Create A New Future (2012)

This book is a good compilation of ideas about starting your own small business. It lacks originality, but that's OK because the author does a good job of pulling together wisdom and putting it out there in a readable form. For me, this was mostly old-hat stuff and I gained little from what I read. That said, I did gain a few new things: the 39-step product launch checklist is useful, as is his concept that if you are going to offer a warranty, then make it GREAT for the user - 125% back - or don't do it at all; likewise with sales on products, make the sale meaningful - 10% off is not meaningful - or don't do it at all.I wish I could give this book a higher rating, it's not a bad book, it's just that it is such a rehash in so many ways. That said, if you are not a jaded 50-something like me, who's read hundreds of business books, then it might be a five star. This work provides a lot of helpful insight, some of which I'd say is basic business savvy. Guillebeau focuses on turning a hobby or a niche into a small business. His main point seems to be to encourage people to pursue something that makes them happy and adds value to other people's lives. This book is about micro-business, but he does give some mention to scaling a business up and creating a business to later sell it. I think it's good that he gives other modes some mention, though I believe he did say he wasn't one for outsourcing.Guillebeau managed to put a lot of information into this book and make it enjoyable to read. I rented it from the library and am considering buying it because I'd like to write up a contrast review between this and the book I'm currently reading by Ferriss: The 4-Hour Workweek. They're both about lifestyle design and work, but their foundation seems completely different.
