About book Terrorists In Love: The Real Lives Of Islamic Radicals (2011)

A Hindi film called Aamir was released in 2008. In it, a young man is involuntarily drawn into the world of terrorism because of the threat to the lives of his family members. The film ends with voice-overs of reporters calling him a suicide bomber. Bernie's story in Terrorists In Love reminded me of this film, though the paths taken by both protagonists aren't exactly similar. The plot of Aamir could easily have fit into Ballen's book. Where his 'characters' are concerned, I was both intrigued and horrified by their stories -- particularly those of Shaheed and Kamal, even though the latter did not exactly join a terror cell or execute any operation. I suppose his story was to serve as a juxtaposition to the likes of Zeddy, even if their motivations were somewhat similar. I have to add though that Zeddy bored me after a while (I couldn't wait to finish with him). Nevertheless, this makes for necessary reading if you want to understand why some terrorists do what they do. I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. This was by far the most painstaking gutwrentching novel I have read in some time. Your a fly on the wall watching the lives of normal muslim people. The circumstances/brainwashing that goes into turning them into killers...for a few comes the realization maybe this is not the muslim way. I ended up giving it 2 stars because it really felt manufactured overall.
