hilarious insights into the life of a lahori begum. shes got the money, the lack of common sense but a good heart that sees her through the many situations she finds herself in. not as good as the diary of a social butterfly but picks up in good flow midway through the book.i find myself wondering more now what she looks like and if a movie based on her would be like a sex in the city - lhr edition, with the begummat of lahore playing leading roles. "Duty Free" is (very) loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma. At first glance, it's got a bit of a "Confessions of a Shopaholic" vibe to it, except set in Lahore, Pakistan instead of NYC: it's very light, fun read, written in the first person, with an unapologetically frivolous narrator with a knack for malapropisms. On second glance, it's an infinitely smarter and more thoughtful book than "Shopaholic".I really liked the mash-up of the chick-lit genre with the reality of life in present-day Pakistan. It's interesting to see the author take a genre that's known for fluff, and then use it to dance around complicated questions (often related to inequality, the uncertainty and fear of living in an increasingly insecure city, and globalization). I haven't seen chick-lit done in quite this way before, and I really enjoyed it.
