I'd been reading Iris Johansen forever - since her first book was published - but quit several years ago because her books became full of melodrama, and totally unrealistic characters and plots. Yet, the concept of a forensic sculptor that helps bring missing children "home", still draws me back once in a while to try again, hoping that Ms. Johansen has gone back to good writing. Sorry to say, she has not. I bought this and the next in the series on sale in paperback, and am really glad I didn't pay for the hard covers. More melodrama, more unrealistic characters and plots.... Very disappointed. I liked the story line in this book, but several things bugged me. First, I know you're not supposed to end sentences with prepositions, but we all do it, and we surely do it in speaking. Therefore, having a burly, rugged character say, "I wanted to know with just what I had to contend" drives me nuts. Please! That guy is surely not going to say that...he's going to say, "I wanted to know what I had to contend with." There were a bunch of examples like that in this book, along with some draggy parts and some sappy parts. I did finish the book, but I would have to say that I'm not a huge fan of Iris Johansen's writing...I'll give her another shot to see if I change my mind!
