After having gorged on fantasy books the whole summer, I came to this with a continuing cynicism that it would be 'more of the same'. However I was very pleasantly surprised, and found this a refreshing and convincing novel of a girl finding her unique abilities in a magical empire.A particularly touching part for me was Ciardis' encounter with the oracle and her pure and honest heart.On to book 2! Sworn to Raise was definitely not the best book I have ever read. Often it was boring and no overly exciting event comes to mind when I think of this book. It was not very well written and although the story idea had potential the author ended up writing a book that often seemed scattered and not thought through. I do not think I will read the second book. If you want to read a well thought out book this is not the book for you.
