About book Sun Stand Still: What Happens When You Dare To Ask God For The Impossible (2010)
The most difficult thing about writing a Christian self-help book is not the information. It's the inspiration. In Sun Stand Still (fantastic title), Furtick encourages us to be people who pray audacious prayers, expect God to do audacious things, and live audacious lives as a result.And that's pretty much the whole book.I agree with this focus a LOT. As Christians we need to be doing far more audacious things, living far more unexpected lives. And there was nothing in the book that I really disagreed with very much.But at the same time, I didn't much out of it either. That main theme was all that was there. I felt like the book could have been rewritten in a single chapter without losing anything.So the question is - does the book inspire people? If it does, then real inspiration to do that single simple message is worth it. I deeply want people to be inspired to live audacious lives.But I didn't get much out of it myself. Therefore, two stars. Read this, if only to gain exposure from a mega church but don't read this to learn. There were a few things I found uncomfortable with this pastor and his church that lean toward the unhealthy.A church is not successful based on its numbers.A healthy church has the majority, if not all serving. His church is 12,000 and only a few thousand serve.He mentioned that he doesn't even know the roles in his church. The pastor needs to know each person, because in the end he is accountable for his flock.Serving in the church is the direct affect of salvation. He mentioned that his performers performed, and then were saved a few months later.It a lot of I, me, look what I did. And I'm only halfway though the book.
