This is a romance manga series, primarily focusing on the relationship between the popular Yamato, and Mei, who was anti-social, and the people close to them. The heroine, Mei Tachibana learns to open up and we see her struggles that come up in her first romantic relationship, and from having friends for the first time in a long time.I watched the anime some time back, and even though I tend to shy away from watching romances, I watched this one on the whim and liked it. Since volume one of the manga was available at the library that I now go to, I decided to check it out. The art isn’t this series’ strongest point, so that is not what you would look at this series for. However, I do like the characters of this series. Everyone has their own issues and insecurities which comes to light and you see them try dealing with those things. I say if you like Romances, then this could be a decent one to take a look at. Just because I gave it 3 stars doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. My ratings are based a bit by instinct and gut-feeling, and my gut told me that this volume doesn't quite reach 4 stars. 16 year old Mei has lived her whole life without friends. Early childhood betrayals taught her others can't be trusted, because they will only leave you in the dust when you need them most. She avoids people on principle, making her somewhat lonely. Still, she is incredibly strong, walks her own path, and has strong ideals on what friendship should be. Yamato is the complete opposite, he acts like a chameleon, fitting into any crowd, so he knows what it is like to be judged on appearance alone. When he barges into Mei's life, they each find someone that they can learn from. Mei discovers others can be reliable, and Yamato finally finds someone who sees the true him. A lot happens in volume one, yet it never feels rushed, despite how quickly Mei's first friend becomes her first boyfriend. Their relationship is based on values that make them a rather sweet couple, but the author also frankly discusses the emotional and physical attractions between characters; this exploration of the romantic and sexual nature of love makes them feel like real teens. The art wavers at times, but works hard to emphasize these factors with its delicate screentones, and plentiful use of blush lines. Unlike other romance manga, this one actually goes into the relationships between other characters very early on. This is an incredibly refreshing, and more realistic approach that would be nice to see more often. It is hard to guess where a relationship between two such different people will go, but for now it looks good. As Mei comes out of her shell, she starts to experience new things, and that will help her grow as a character.

Enjoyable and rather cute art style that reminded me of Strobe Edge. Eyes were very detailed and the hair was drawn beautifully all throughout. The plot and characters, however, felt too familiar to me. While not cliched, generic, maybe? The awkward girl, the popular boy who pulls her out of her shell. It's a story line that could be applied to a number of series, but each had a twist that made them stand apart. This first volume, however, didn't really have anything that grabbed me. It was cute, but not so much so that I have to get the next volume.That being said, I may read the next, just to give it a chance and see if it does become more individual. And it wasn't a horrible read whatsoever, just rather predictable. EDIT: And on the cover, Yamato looks like Mukuro!
