About book Suck It, Wonder Woman!: The Misadventures Of A Hollywood Geek (2010)
I have this goodreads mental rule, where I won't review a book unless I've read all of it closely. I am breaking the rule: I didn't read this book cover to cover. I started it in good faith, and wound up skimming the rest. I also don't like talking about the 'fake geek girl' phenomenon, which I don't really get. And yet...Olivia Munn doesn't come across as a geek. She describes comic cons fans by saying "I love spending time with them, " going on to say sure, she's one of them herself. But she doesn't describe anything from her life that points to anything geeky or nerdy (and that's the part I read closely). The book is instead a loosely strung together memoir with almost every anecdote having to do with sex. The geek parts of the book include art by fans, or pictures of her dressed in seductive cosplay. Her most important lesson from Return of the Jedi is "Always, always wear a gold bikini." Hey, I don't care, and I love gold bikinis. But it's farcical. There's something that kind-of offends me about it.Olivia Munn can be or pretend to be whatever she wants and it's none of my business. But writing wise, editing wise, and flow wise, I'm not into it either. There is gratuitous cursing everywhere, she describes tragic deaths with slews of exclamation points...I get the feeling that the audience is teen or pre-teen boys who just want to think about Munn in revealing clothes while talking a little geek-dirty. And then sometimes it's downright irresponsible. I quote: "If you're a preteen kid about to move...put down the Donald Duck shirt and pick up a gun!" It's like she doesn't live in the world. I don't know, I guess I just hoped it would be something we could all sink our teeth into. I like to think you can be a sex object for teen geeks and still have some substance. Olivia Munn is not the best writer, but I got the sense reading her book that she is very sincere and genuinely cares about the things into which she invests her time. Over the course of the book there were sections that made her seem very "on" and fake, but there were others that were so personal too, it balanced out. I've come to the conclusion that she wanted to write a book, and she wrote one her way and had fun. She talked about the stuff she wanted to talk about in the way she thought would be fun and entertaining, and communicate what she wanted. It was a fun read, especially for nerds :)
