The good news: it is a good story. Bad news: it takes too long to get there. The girl is too sweet, she is just not real and has no back bone. It is a bit preachy but not over the top. And finally, there is no justice. (Spoiler alert) The man who attacked her... Gets away. The money the captain pays.... Gone. The evil, selfish, thieving, murdering seamstress,... Her crimes, she never even suffers the natural consequences of! I don't think I am a vengeful person, but a little justice would have been nice. Well, I read it all. Truly, I'm not sure why. I enjoyed it for awhile, but then began to get irritated by things like the weeks of travel time from England to France (I'm sorry, but it's just not that far, even by sailing ship), or celebrating Thanksgiving--in the French countryside, early in the nineteenth century. And turkeys are native to the Americas, so they wouldn't have been found wild there. It felt like the story almost flew apart towards the end, with little rationale for many actions. What turned the Captain's heart to God? This should have been a real turning point in the story, for surely this would be significant to Frannie. I also have an issue with Christian fiction in which supposedly devout characters never darken the doorway of a church, and only rarely read their Bibles.
