But Wick knows that a lady and a servant can never find true love...or can they?This was a short story I got for my Kindle. Wick is the half-brother of the Prince in Eloisa James' "A Kiss at Midnight" and serves as his brother's butler. I'm glad he got his own story, but wish it could have been a little longer. But, as it was, I enjoyed the story. My rating: 3.5 Stars. Let me say one thing: I love Wick! I thought he was a bit slow to see the light in this story, but because of the constant reminders of is not so noble birth, I will cut him some slack for not wanting the love of his life to suffer from nasty words.As for our heroine, I empathized with her plight somewhat, but I also thought she was a bit immature and shallow. She was supposed to be 20 but she acted even younger than that upon finding out that sleeping with her betrothed, Rodney, was not as romantic as she would have liked. You have known the guy for 13 years! Why didn't you say or see the truth sooner?! And the guy adored her...yes he was simple and not super muscular, but I thought her reaction was a bit of a spoiled brat and not a worthy match for my dear Wick. And the constant comparisons that Wick and Philippa made between Wick and Rodney were mean spirited and not necessary. Also, James tried to reassure us readers that Rodney would have been an unfaithful husband, but I don't think so. He adored Philippa and had not slept around before her for fear of diseases. I don't think that would have changed. He was a simple guy and Philippa would have been enough. It was just a way for Philippa to justify her breaking off the engagement.However, we learn that Philippa had pretty big ambitions, but despite her shallow behavior early on, Philippa sees what all us readers see and that is that Wick is awesome despite his birth (which surprised me somewhat about Philippa but hey...Wick can be convincing). When she meets Wick, the attraction is immediate, and I thought James did a nice job of showing their relationship growing in the short novella. It was nice to revisit the castle and Gabriel and Kate, even though they were tired, worried new parents. I think Wick could have done better, but since Philippa made him happy, I'm happy. 4 stars.
