About book Stolen Into Slavery: The True Story Of Solomon Northup, Free Black Man (2012)

Stolen Into Slavery by Judith and Dennis Fradin is an excellent work of nonfiction. Nonfiction includes truthful stories about people's lives, historical events, and current events. Stolen Into Slavery by Judith and Dennis Fradin is based off of the book 12 Years a Slave, which was written by Solomon Northup. Stolen Into Slavery is about Solomon Northup, who was a free black man from Saratoga Springs, New York. In April of 1841, he was tricked into going to the circus with two white men. When they arrived in the South, he was drugged and taken to a slave pen. He was then sold to William Ford in New Orleans. When Solomon tried to claim that he was free, he would be whipped or badly beaten. 12 years later, after being sold to many different owners in different places, Solomon met Samuel Bass, a carpenter who came to build Epps's (Solomon's current owner) home. After meeting in the middle of the night, they got letters out to William Perry and Cephas Parker. On January 3, 1853 two men arrived at Epps's plantation. Samuel Bass and Henry Bliss Northup came to rescue him from the slavery he never deserved. Stolen Into Slavery is a work of nonfiction because it is telling the truth through a biography and a story. Throughout the book, there are pictures, text, and maps. There is also a table of contents and timeline. Stolen Into Slavery is very well organized because the authors put text and pictures together so we can visualize what the objects and ideas in the stories looked like more easily. I still feel like the authors could have put more pictures with the text so readers can visualize what is going on more. Judith and Dennis Fradin and seemed to have a lot of knowledge on the topic of being stolen into slavery because when I finished reading this book, I knew a lot more about this topic than I did when I started reading it. The authors seem to be biased against slavery because they wrote about how being stolen into slavery was horrible and unconstitutional to any black person. They seemed to have a fair portrait about slavery. In Stolen Into Slavery, people can expect to learn about Solomon Northup's interesting and inspirational story. This book gives you a further understanding of what happened during the time of slavery. It gives you a look into another side of it: being taken from the north illegally. Stolen Into Slavery packed in a lot of detail into the perfect amount of pages. This book was not too long and not too short. At first, I thought nonfiction would be totally horrible, but now I know how much I like this genre. If you find a topic you are interested in, a nonfiction book would be a fantastic choice to find more information about it. People who are interested in and want to learn more about the history of slavery in the United States would thoroughly enjoy Stolen Into Slavery. I would rate this book a 10/10 because it was interesting and informational and they made the truth and facts seem like a story. Overall, Stolen Into Slavery is one of the most phenomenal books I have ever read. I haven't seen the movie or read the adult version of this story, but this condensed, young adult version hits all the important notes. Solomon Northup's harrowing tale of being kidnapped at 33 years of age and sold into slavery is tragic. He never gave up hope of escape or rescue. The details of his life on the Epps plantation are not nearly as graphic as I'm sure they are in the original version, but it is still apparent how cruel his master was to his slaves.
