About book Star Trek: The Next Generation / Doctor Who: Assimilation2, Volume 1 (2012)

Interesting... but a bit blah. The volume brings together issues one to four of the series. The quality of the artwork varies from quite good (issues one and two) to rather poor (issue four, where the resemblances between the various characters and their real-life counterparts is almost non-existent). Issue three contains a significant flashback to a 4th Doctor/TOS encounter. The characterization, to me, seems stilted towards the TNG crew. They seem recognizable, and almost believable. The Doctor -- both in his fourth and eleventh persona -- gravitates towards indistinctly quirky, with preciously little of either Baker's or Smith's natural gravitas. Poor Rory -- the odd time he even gets to speak more than a monosyllable -- reads a one-note, put-upon character. I suppose the plot is serviceable enough -- the Cybermen join up with the Borg, and this is a Bad Thing, but certainly not crackingly intriguing. I'm reading on in the series in the hope it delivers a little more bang, but I'm not at all certain I'll get it. I have been incredibly excited about this since I first heard about it, and was surprised to find the very concept of it was getting a lot of flak and scorn on social media. Had a hard time finding it through legit means (I'm a fan of the TV franchises and a comics newbie unaccustomed to comic publishing standards), but finally managed to purchase a digital version via my DW Comics app. The first installment is mostly focused on Eleven, Amy and Rory--they are characterized well and I love the art style. Can't wait to get the later installments, which I know are already "released" but which I can't seem to find anywhere. I'd like to buy a hard copy of the full series in book form so I hope that happens!

This volume poses an interesting philosophical question - is it fan service if no one is served?
