Anders had het langer geduurd voor ik een boek van haar had gelezen, waarschijnlijk, en dat zou zonde geweest zijn.Ze heeft een vertelstijl die je meteen meesleept naar dat door de zon geblakerde en door de staalfabriek overheerste, verwaarloosde, marginale dorpje aan de door toeristen en bemiddelde landgenoten vermeden Italiaanse kust.Ze vertelt over hoe de mensen daar woonden, met elkaar omgingen, in een vicieuze cirkel terecht kwamen, te vroeg zwanger raakten en trouwden, kortom aan de fabriek bleven vasthangen. Ze focust daarbij op twee tienermeisjes die hun ontluikende seksualiteit ontdekken.Boven alles hangt de donkere staalstinkwolk en je voelt aan dat er iets vreselijks gaat gebeuren; ik verwachtte elk moment een verkrachting, een verdrinking, een familiedrama, een zelfmoord, noem maar op. Wat er uiteindelijk gebeurt, is zo onverwacht (omdat ik het niet wilde geloven want ergens was het wel voorspelbaar) en zo snel, dat als ze het gebeuren niet uit verschillende hoeken had belicht (en met andere woorden een beetje had gerekt), ik geen traan had gelaten. Met tuiten mensen, met tuiten.Het was lang geleden dat een boek me nog zo diep heeft geraakt dat ik zakdoekjes nodig had. Sowieso één van de beste boeken van 2014! I absolutely loved this book. it's exactly what I needed after being stuck in a bunch of books I didn't really care for. Along came this book and swept me of my feet. I read most of it during one day and became snuggly book lovingly engrossed. I'm betting there's a lot of Italian specific things I missed, a bunch of working class imagery that I can't really get and some things that just got lost in the translation. What I can and do get is that while it's easy to think that teenage girls' life is all about boys and make up, while in reality this is it. It is about friendship, close complicated deep friendships laced with betrayal and confusion, but with a enthusiastic pure will to live that make them magical. It is about your family, your parents who are worthless and your siblings are older and beyond you, or hopeless and an embarrassment that you love, and there are deep dark secrets (real or not) that make you want to protect your family. It is about the anxiety about where you're heading, all the life altering decisions that everyone expects you to take like you were choosing your next lipstick. Although the main characters are teenage girls this is not a YA-book, at least not by any standard definition. This is a book about class, crumbling industries, social injustice, social services who keeps repeating that it's not their problem, why people want to leave and why people choose to stay. Yet it was far from as depressing as I was expecting, it was in certain ways light, written with a warmth concerning the subjects and environments and people that is contagious. More importantly perhaps it is written with a life-affirming energy that makes it a joy to read.
