New York: Random House.ALSC Graphic Novels Reading ListGraphic NovelThis is a fun and exciting graphic novel about an Amoeba who is trying to find himself and just get through the school day. Squish has to deal with school, family, and friends as well as trying to save himself and everyone else from evil things in the school after reading his favorite comic Super Amoeba. This is a great book that will keep students interested with the pictures and colors. I think it would be a great introduction for students who may just be entering middle school and getting adjusted to a new school. Amoebae and other microscopic lifeforms have never been so cute. Squish is the Holm siblings' boy counterpart to Babymouse. The two characters are pretty similar -- highly imaginative, picked on at school, yet always striving for heroism -- so chances are good that if you like one you'll like the other. There are plenty of jokes based on the slippery science of the different amoebae, paramecia, slime molds, etc., that comprise the cast, and the book ends on a satisfying, if subversive, note. Good fun.
