About book Spy The Lie: Three Former CIA Officers Reveal Their Secrets To Uncloaking Deception (2012)

The authors have developed a deception detection system which has worked for them in law enforcement, intelligence operations, and domestic settings. The system is presented in a concise and organized manner, with helpful appendices. The book also works surprisingly well as an audiobook both due to the organization of the material and the well-chosen reader. However some of the examples are belabored, especially the extensively annotated transcripts of interviews of Anthony Weiner and Jerry Sandusky. We did not need a system in order to perceive that those two lied. It's always fun to read something completely out of your normal genres and preferences, and this is a great example. I came across this book in the library and figured it might contain something useful I could use in jy fiction writing. It turned out to be a very interesting and entertaining read. Spy the Lie is a book written by three former CIAS operatives and it teaches you how to see when people are lying. The authors use many examples from their experience, but also from the news. It's interesting for instance how they analyzed Jerry Sandusky lying before he confessed to abusing those poor boys. They knew because of his language, the way he answered (or evaded) questions and more. The same for Congressman Weiner. If you were fascinated by 'Lie to Me' (the TV series), read this book - it's the science and experience from a realistic perspective. I loved it, and I learned a lot.
