As I started this book, I had my fingers crossed it would at least approximate the wonderful stories of Anne Hillerman's dad Tony. Within a few pages it was clear that it would not be a disappointment, and that Anne was not going to play it safe. This book continues the wonderful descriptive narrative of the Navajo country and surrounding areas of the Southwest, and adds a female voice to the familiar characters of Chee and Leaphorn and their supporting cast. Anne Hillerman's detailed descriptions of both the landscape and the small details of characters' actions and surroundings are wonderful. The story is most intriguing. I'm pleased that the Navajo Tribal Police mysteries continue...well done!...and look forward to further Bernie Manuelito Chee mysteries. This is the first novel by Anne Hillerman, daughter of the late noted mystery author Tony Hillerman, and it continues the story of retired Navajo Nation Police Lt. Joe Leaphorn, his friend and former assistant Sgt. Jim Chee, and Navajo Nation Police Officer Bernadette Manuelito. This story focuses on Manuelito ("Bernie") and her husband, Chee, which is appropriate, as Anne Hillerman is both continuing her fathers' characters and creating and fleshing out her own. It also interweaves the repercussions from an old case that Leaphorn had investigated many years ago involving Chaco Canyon. So I was hooked from the beginning. Good writing, good characterization, chilling but believable villains -- this book has it all. And I enjoyed having much of the story told from Bernie's perspective. I highly recommend "Spider Woman's Daughter" and am looking forward to Anne Hillerman's next book.
