About book Sophia's War: A Tale Of The Revolution (2012)
I have yet to find an Avi novel that I have not enjoyed, and this one is no exception. I prefer historical fiction and this story of young Sophia Calderwood incorporates the essential mix of fact and invention. For a twelve-year-old girl, Sophia portrays great courage and maturity, as she is placed in often treacherous situations. When her father is injured and is no longer able to work as before, Sophia willingly picks up the slack and becomes the family's primary wage earner. She equally puts aside her fear, girts up her courage and performs countless patriotic acts, with rare acknowledgement of her own safety. The inclusion of Benedict Arnold and his attempts and later exposure of treasonous acts provided sound historical reference. I have encouraged my daughters to read this, as Sophia models exemplary patriotic behavior. This was an amazing read. Sophia is a strong female character whom the reader cheers for from page one. She's smart, brave, and determined. She makes a great role modal, inspiring readers to fight for what they believe in. After reading this book I feel like I have a better understanding of what life was like during this time. I used this as a read aloud to accompany a 5th grade unit on the Revolutionary War. Each day the students begged me to keep reading. It's a wonderful book to pair with a historical teaching unit and could be used for grade 5 through 10.
