About book Sober Mercies: How Love Caught Up With A Christian Drunk (2013)
This book was helpful to me in my role as a pastor. Seminary taught me how to be a leader, how to study the Bible and how to preach, not how to interact with the brokenness of the people within the church. Ms. Kopp handled some of the deep questions about faith and brokenness with a vulnerable openness. Our book club was blessed by being able to have a personal Skype conversation with Ms. Kopp and ask some of the lingering questions that we all had. I've never had the opportunity to do this with an author before, and it really added to the value of the book for all of us. This book blew me away. I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day. Heather has written an open, personal, emotional, raw accounting of her descent into alcoholism and subsequent recovery. What makes this book so intriguing is her explanation of grace and its application in her life as a Christian who became an alcoholic. I grew up in the church and heard of grace and mercy almost constantly, but Heather's tale is what has made it real to me outside of the theological discussions and explanations. I was also touched by her role as a friend/mentor/parent and encouraged to be and do more for those God places in my life. Thank you, Heather, for sharing your story.
