About book So, Anyway... (2014)

If you're expecting an autobiography of the Python years-present, you will be disappointed. This book quite literally starts with his first memory and ends with the formation of the team that stated Python (with a gratuitous shout-out to the 2014 stage show thrown in at the very, very end).He writes at length about his school studies and how he came about finding his comedic voice/talent. By his own admission, it was not ambition, but a lot of being at the right place at the right time, and knowing people that he went to school with at Cambridge.I never knew that he and Marty Feldman worked together as writers for various David Frost shows, nor that he and Graham Chapman were instrumental in getting him in front of the camera. So now I have to go watch a bunch of Python sketches and see what the other cast members have written about the Python years to find the whole story. I grew up loving Monty Python, especially the movie Life of Brian, and John Cleese was always my favorite of the Pythons. His A Fish Called Wanda movie is magnificent, and I love some of the bit parts he has done, such as the evil viking kind in Erik the Viking and Robin Hood in Time Bandits. Learning about his life was nice, but in the end this book ended up disappointing me a bit. It focuses more on the less interesting (to me) parts of his development, and just when it reaches the stage when I was most interested...it ended. It got to when Monty Python just began and that was the end. I wanted to know more about the Python days, especially how the films came about, and I would have loved to have some good info about A Fish Called Wanda and some of Cleese's other small roles. It feels as if he is planning a sequel...
