About book Snakeskin Boots (2011)

I couldn't wait to get to the end of this humorous mystery romance between bookstore clerk Jeff, a weresnake and frequent customer, Brad, a werewolf. Thankfully the mystery went beyond how to get a snake and a wolf together. Someone is making the most fabulous fashion accessories out of the were community and they've got to be stopped. Being a shifter fan I was excited to start this read, but after a few pages all my excitement had died. Humor is not an easy thing and for me this read thoroughly missed the mark. It also made some changes happen for me, for one, eggplant is off the menu indefinitely for me. For another I have a whole new quiver about snakes and scaly skin and there's no point in me going on about that. The plot seemed rather thin even for a read this short and the mystery itself rather gory. This tale was more about the mystery than the romance but that doesn't mean there wasn't steamy sex. Hitting some positive notes, this tale has a different take on the were community introducing ignored species (i.e. were-scorpions, were-chickens, were-monkeys and just think were-mosquitoes) giving the author plenty of room to explore many different species pairings. (I confess I did laugh a couple of times, mostly at the idea of a snake stalking a wolf, the picture in my head was too funny.) Retaining animal qualities and parts while in human form and the self-deprecating narrative humor that Jeff displayed during the first portion of the book was completely lost on me (too much and too forced for my taste) but gave this series ownership on a whole new sub-genre. While not the read for me it could be quite popular for M/M, erotica, adult humor and/or quirky read lovers. Cute. Funny. Sexy. The witty dialogue in this story will keep you smiling through a quick, enjoyable read. Despite the dark undertone in the plot, there's a distinct lack of angst or drama. Instead, the humor gives life to each of the characters. And, if you like puns, you'll want to read this again and again to catch them all. The only downside I found was the large cast. It was hard to keep the character names straight. I enjoyed this so much that I now find the first-person perspective a little disappointing, because the end rushed up so quickly! Still, I'll be keeping an eye out for more about this pair...
