About book Small Furry Hope: Dog Rescue And The Meaning Of Life (2010)
Another difficult book to review. I have tremendous respect for those who dedicate their lives to what they believe. And I love animals(we have always had rescue dogs). That being said, seeing "how the sausage is made" is not always pretty. The author and his wife started a dog rescue with no plan or proper funding. Their interactions helped some dogs, but put others at tremendous risk. Steven appeared to not have the emotional makeup for this type of lifestyle. I've lost animals that I loved as much as anyone in my family, but unfortunately most of us have to continue on with our lives instead of sitting in a chair for days. I guess if you have a wife that doesn't mind living in squalor, and no kids, it's ok.I also didn't realize so much of the book would be related to his search for the "meaning of life". It appeared he didn't have enough information to fill the book, so he included some of the most far out there thoughts on human and animal interaction. He was dismissive of some orthodox philosophy, but seems to have no problem with shape shifting or other types of spiritual interactions, usually induced by some type of mind altering substance.Overall I was disappointed with the book. If you have always felt that humans have a deep connection to animals, and animals are connected to us and other animals, a connection that cannot be explained... read this book. Full of amazing facts, great theories and heartwarming stories. It's spiritual, educational and philosophical. There are Chapters that will leave you with a feeling of "Huh, really??" or perhaps..."how cool is that?"
