About book Skip Beat!, Vol. 20 (2010)

This volume felt like an interlude in our regularly scheduled program. Rather than continue on with Kyoko's acting, we see her compassion and love for Maria come out when she decides to plan a party to help Maria enjoy her birthday once again. We see not only a family come together out of love (Maria's), as well as the make-shift family Kyoko has built around herself. I loved her surprise birthday party, and the care that everyone put in to making sure she knew she was loved. Ren was so sweet to get her the rose and want to be the first person to give her a birthday present. My favorite part of this volume, though, was Moko's back and forth over her desire to get Kyoko a present, just because she thought she'd like it. :D Moko has changed so much, and though you can see her fighting against her own developing humanity and love for Kyoko, she just can't resist! Also, her extreme, evil delight in "beating" Ren at gifts is delightful. These characters, they just make me smile. Now on to more plot in the next volume, please! :) I know it's been a long time...but Skip Beat! has brought me back to Goodreads. I did read some other stuff in the meantime, really. I just kinda only want to talk about this one right now though. A bit of SPOILER follows. But you knew that. It's frickin' volume 20.Having tied up a sweet and rather emotionally serious (although not actually "heavy") plot in volume 19, volume 20 goes all cool whip on our a$$es. It is light and happy as Kyoko tries to help little sort of recurring character Maria accept the joy of her birthday (also the day of her mother's death). I would say that at first blush, this volume does not appear to advance the main plot, that of Kyoko's emotional development and rediscovery of love, at all. But it really kinda does. It gathers all the people that love Kyoko together (which of course she does without realizing it), and, well, there's all this love thrown around. You know. Sweet and stuff. There is a good deal of Skip Beatish humor to help with all the sugar, and the whole thing is still a nice creamy layer on the Skip Beat! cake.God I'm hungry. I think I'm going to go rummage through the back for leftover pie or Valentine's Day candy or something.

I thought Ren and Kyoko would be together after the party, considering their feelings for each other
