About book Sister Mine (2007)

Shae-Lynn Penrose is a tough talking, pink Stetson-wearing ex-cop always ready for a fight. Now the only cab driver in the small mining town of Jolly Mount in Pennsylvania, Shae-Lynn gets into various scrapes with the locals. Raised by her abusive father after her mother died in childbirth, she had to look after her little sister Shannon from a young age, before becoming a mother herself at seventeen to Clay. The town exists because of the mines, and getting out is difficult. Shae-Lynn did get out, and took her son with her, but comes back after her father’s death and settles into a life there. Two years earlier five of her friends became heroes when they survived an explosion and being buried alive for four days. They are each coming to terms with what happened, in their own way. Shae-Lynn lives alone, though with many a man to keep her warm, and there is one in particular – her best friend E.J. – who she can’t stop thinking about. Her sister Shannon disappeared years ago, and Shae-Lynn assumed her dead. Until someone comes looking for her.Along with a lawyer and well-to-do woman, Shae-Lynn also has to fend off a brutal Russian gangster who knows more about Shannon than he’s letting on. Where has she been all these years, and just what exactly is she involved in? Shae-Lynn has to put the pieces together while her own world comes tumbling down when her son’s father, whom she’s never revealed, wants back in his life. This is the first of Tawni O’Dell’s books I’ve read, and going off this I’d definitely pick up her others. Shae-Lynn is a deeply flawed character, quick to anger, often violent, but she’s also extremely caring, and it’s this affection for others that gets her into scrapes. She spent her childhood looking after her father and sister, two people who didn’t necessarily return the favour, then goes on to raise her son alone, and return to town watching over everyone as a cop. She’s incredibly vulnerable also, used to beatings and unsure of how to get true affection from others. The only place she seems to feel truly secure and sure of herself is as a mother, and it’s only when she becomes one that she starts to stand up for herself. At times I found her difficult to like, and frustrating, but I was always on her side. All the characters in Sister Mine are fully fleshed out and believable, each one with extended back stories and lives outside their relationship with Shae-Lynn. It was easy to see why they behaved the way they did. The one possible exception to this is Clay’s father, who is a bit of a pantomime villain, only out for what he can get, not caring about anything except himself and money. I will say that the ending was a little pat, a little too nicely wrapped up, and yet not at the same time. I think mainly it came about too quickly, and I wanted to see what else happened. I wanted to spend more time in Shae-Lynn’s world, which I should see as a good thing I guess. Definitely recommend this one.

Warren County Public Libraries chose Tawnie O’Dell as their 2011 selected author for their Read Along the River Community Read Program. The author visit was October 21 at the Warren Public Library. She began her talk by thanking the representatives of the local libraries for their important work and their ability to continue on in spite of cutbacks in funding. The Public Library in her hometown of Indiana, PA, had recently closed due to lack of funding. She refers to her books as her children. Sister Mine is her girl and is written in first person female At her book signing, I purchased Sister Mine. Last week I decided to take a break from required reading and picked up it up. I can honestly say that it is one of the worst books I have ever read. None of the characters were likable. None. The main plot was stupid. The subplots were worse. The protagonist is a forty year old ex-cop who now runs a taxi service with her yellow Subaru. She gets beat up, a lot. Her long lost sister makes a living selling her babies created in one night stands. Her son is now a cop was fathered by an unidentified man. They all are reeling from a mine explosion….Gag me with a spoon! What a waste of my time!

Do You like book Sister Mine (2007)?

Set in the coal mining region of Western Pennsylvania, this book tells the story of Shae-Lynn Penrose and her sister Shannon as well as the Jolly Mount Five~~coal miners who survived a mining accident that found them trapped underground for five days.Shae-Lynn and Shannon grew up without a Mother. Their Mom died just after giving birth to Shannon~~something that would come to shape Shannon’s entire being. The girls’ Dad was a coal miner who was ill equipped to handle raising two girls. He did it poorly and he took out his anger on Shae-Lynn. Always trying to protect Shannon, Shae-Lynn took the beatings. And then when Shae-Lynn became a mother herself at the age of seventeen, she stopped taking beatings and refused to allow her father to lay a finger on her baby son. Destined to make something of her life, Shae-Lynn left Jolly Mount and became a police officer and raises her son on her own. After that, Shannon disappeared, without a trace.E.J., Jimmy, Lib, Dusty and Ray became famous after the mining disaster a JoJo Mine. Fame isn’t always a blessing. Each of these men are facing the demons of that disaster. E.J. and Shae-Lynn were always best friends and now their relationship is strained~~especially since Shae-Lynn moved back to Jolly Mount to open her own cab company (in a town where people don’t need a cab, they just need a ride).Eighteen years after Shannon’s disappearance, she shows up on Shae-Lynn’s door step. She’s nine months pregnant. And she’s hiding from someone. Determined to help her sister and to figure out why she needs to hide, Shae-Lynn finds herself on the receiving end of the fist of a Russian thug. Here’s what I liked~~the coal mining story. It was brilliant and the author was able to portray coal mining with integrity. I loved the characters of the coal miners. They were gritty and honest. I also loved the story of Fanci and her brother Kenny. Here’s where I glazed over~~Shae-Lynn COULD have been a character every bit as prolific as Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum and Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson but the author ended up making Shae-Lynn almost unlikeable. She is snarky and that’s kind of fun; but she’s also mean when she needn’t be. This character is a forty year old woman who picks fights in bars, dresses like a 21 year old, picks up guys she doesn’t know, and yet she sits in judgment of sister. Who by the way~~is another very unlikeable character. I wish that this were two different books: One story of the coal miners and the other story of Shae-Lynn and Shannon. I commend the writing style~~it flows. I absolutely plan to read more from this author. I expect her to wow me. I know she can do it.3.5 Stars

While you are reading, keep in mind the main character speaks and acts like a dumb, promiscuous, trashy, bar fighting, something-but-nothing to prove, attitude saturated, typical 20 year old…….oh wait….she is 40. The main character in this book, Shae-Lynn, is not likable on page; perhaps it is because I do not like women like her in real life. She dresses like a bimbo, acts like a fool and the pages are riddled with her speaking about her breasts like they are dangerous ICBM’s and her random stories of “Oh, when I was sleeping with the married senator.” Her hunting of random men to sleep with like a in heat 16 year old, or her other stories of sleeping with half the men in town was ridiculous for a woman of her age; yet the reader cannot expect much less from the type of woman Shae-Lynn is. Is the reader to be impressed with a trashy miner’s daughter who is immature and ridiculous lacking regard for anything that resembles class or respect? This plot would have been more enjoyable if I appreciated the characters. There was promise here, the premise was catching, but all I found was annoyance.

This is another I got to read early. I emailed Tawni and asked to get an ARC and I would share this one with many people becaus of how much I liked her first novel Back Roads. She sent me one and I got to meet her in Chicago. I really liked this one told from Shae-Lynn's voice. She used to be a cop and now drives a cap in a town where no body needs a cab, but lots of people need rides. She moved back to where she grew up and is living with the thought her sister died at the hands of their abusive father and then in the matter of a day she encounters 3 people looking for her sister and Shannon shows up very pregnant with quite a story. I highly recommend this one.
