This book started out really great. I thought it was an interesting premise and was really interested when it switched to the second daughters point of view halfway through. I found the ending dissatisfying though and it didn't seem to have any sort of real resolution. Also I felt bad for both girls in it. One of them doesn't speak top get father again and I feel like we were supposed to side with her but it wasn't really chaurisse's fault that her mother marriee her father first and I think that you have a right to be upset for a while if you discover your father had a secret second family and the daughter secretly befriended you all the while knowing she was your half sister. It was good until the end. I tore through this book so fast! Jones has incredible insight on the inner workings of dysfunctional families. And the ways adults harm their children without meaning to. Painfully relatable, and deceptively well-written. Jones writes so effortlessly. This novel never keeps the reader at an arm's length with over-the-top style or verbosity. It's easy to forget how much talent it takes to pull a reader in that close, which is what I mean when I say "deceptively well-written." Plainly top-notch writing and profoundly great storytelling. I can't believe it took me so long to pick this one up. Jones hit me in the heart and left bruises. Any daughter with a dad who doesn't deserve her will feel connected to this book instantly. At least I did.
I think I'd give it 2.5 stars. I wanted to like this book, but it just didn't pan out.
