About book Sideways On A Scooter: Life And Love In India (2011)
This was a fun read, and I enjoyed the glimpse the author gives us into parts of Indian culture, but it had no real coherence for me - or sense of development. I didn't connect with the author herself, but I did feel drawn into the lives of the several women whose stories she tells - especially as she focused on the expectations held for women by their own families and those they marry into, and the limitations placed on them by caste distinctions and society. Very entertaining. Living in India as a single woman and a foreigner is definitely a challenge. I loved the descriptions of the streets and the people she met, her neighbors, the people she hired to work for her, their families, etc. What a wonderful experience she had. It could have been patronizing, but it's tone is never thus. A fun read about a different culture and by a woman who respects and appreciates India.
