About book Shirt Of Flame: A Year With St. Therese Of Lisieux (2011)

I loved this book. I picked it up because the cover design was beautiful and after reading a few pages, I knew I wanted to own the book so I could write in the margins and really pore over it. I've never liked St. Therese, my name saint, because her language was so flowery and her life so extreme and difficult to identify with. Heather King did a great job though, of pulling out highlights of St. Therese's life or writings and paralleling it with her own life. It challenged me to think about my life, reflect on my own sanctity, and live my reality more fully. I now have a tiny place for Therese on my heart. Not huge! But it's there and it used to not be. this book draws me back again and again to re-read, meditate, reflect on myself and my life ~ all things I ordinarily race away from. But Heather King is no sentimental sweetness. She is hard and clear-eyed; practical and realistic. This book is often described as a year with Therese of Lisieux, a description that put me off. Most books with that subtitle consist of a quotation from the writings of the saint followed by a rather surface little reflection on the topic. Not so here! King does not even follow the traditional format. she tackles her own life in terms of the vision and values of Therese. No sob story here from this divorced, ex-lawyer, sober alcoholic. and in this work, for it is hard work, King looks very soberly at her own efforts, identifying the pitfalls and the steps that rescue us from the pit. No more than Therese does she talk about heaven and hell but rather about today, this person, this depression, this desire. You'll be grateful you read it.
