This book is one of the most beautifully write, lyrical novels I've read in a long time. Binkert has a way of making the characters come alive that is so rare in modern writing. She delves into the era of the Titanic, but does so in a way that is new and fresh. The novel is based on a real woman who boards a boat, destined for America, wearing a white a white evening dress with no luggage or money. Who is she? Why does she not have any belongings? Why is she leaving her supposed comfortable life to board the ship with nothing? The story guides you into the mysterious life of this woman and the eccentric cast of characters that surround her on the boat. I highly recommend adding this novel to your "to read" list if you are interested in historical fiction. This is not your "happily ever after" story, but rather a life-realization journey for many of the characters in this story. Valentina leaves her life and travels as a stowaway on a ship to New York. She comes to realize she determines her happiness and must determine what she wants out of life and make the necessary changes to get there. This is a ship full of troubled lives and many make positive changes.

A strange story but easy to read. One that holds your attention through to the end.
