About book Seriously, Cinderella Is So Annoying!. Trisha Speed Shaskan (2012)

This story is a version of Cinderella written through the eyes of the stepmother. Knowing the story of Cinderella, it was fun to see the changes made in the stepmother’s version. There were similarities, but twists on the tale. Similarities included the characters of the stepmother and her two daughters, and the impact of the animals, even though the animals never talked. Additionally, Cinderella in the story is made to be unfavorable in the eyes of the stepmother because she talks too much and is able to get the chores done too quickly so that the stepmother has to keep giving her more. Differences in that the stepsisters didn’t see mean, but rather annoyed with Cinderella. In the back of the book, it has a think about it section that gives tips for using the book in the classroom. Some ideas include comparing and contrasting the original version of Cinderella and this version. Students could also rewrite the story through other characters like one of the stepsisters, the prince, or even the father. This book reminds me of the book, The True Story of Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka, giving the reader to see the same/similar story that they are used to through a different character’s point of view. This book was also not as good as the title suggested, but it was still okay.Summary: This book is about the story of Cinderella, or Cindy as the Stepmother calls her, told from the point of view of the stepmother. The stepmother starts off talking about how she always wanted a husband and a mansion, so she ends up marrying Cinderella’s dad. But as soon as she stepped foot in the mansion, Cinderella’s dad left on what he called a business trip. Cinderella said he goes on business trips a lot. As soon as the stepmother and her daughters got in the house, Cinderella went on and on telling all kinds of stories. To keep Cinderella from telling stories, she had her clean all day, but that didn’t stop her from telling stories. Then, one day she lost her voice and her stepmother said she wasn’t allowed to go to the ball because she was sick. But of course Cinderella showed up anyway, lost her shoe, and the next day the prince found her and they got married. The stepmother and her daughters lived happily ever after, but they felt sorry for the prince. How to use this book with students: This is another book that is geared towards Kindergarten through 4th graders, and it can also be used in a read aloud and then put in the classroom library so that the students can choose to read it again if they’d like.
