About book Serious Men (2010)

A brilliant read. Based in Mumbai, it clearly showcases the differences and the accepted friction between the Dalits and the Brahmins. Following the separate stories of interesting characters, it leads you through their experiences and makes you realize how life is a series of accomplishments and losses. Written amazingly in Joseph's typical sarcastic style, it may not be as enthralling as The Illicit Happiness of Other People, but it is definitely worth a read. Serious men is an OK book, not too great, not bad either. It starts with trying to touch upon certain things that happen only in India but half way through the story gets lost in an extramarital affair and a woman finding a way to take revenge for all that other men have done to her. I think the writer just got a bit confused there and carried on with the confusion. Again, not bad. There are many instances to which you would relate. I particularly remember one line that goes somewhat like this, “There is something terrible about seeing a man and a woman crying together”. This is the only thing that I remember even after two months of finishing the book.
