About book Selected Stories Of Philip K. Dick (2002)
A few of these stories will put you off. A few of these would excite you to read more of his work. Most of his full length books originate from his excellent short stories. You will start to distinguish familiar themes in his stories around the middle of the book, but if you plough on you will be rewarded with even more similar themes and settings. The highly imaginative futuristic worlds he paints start to become mundane after a few stories. Better writers exist in almost all of the genres he explores, be it futuristic space exploration, drugs, or memory manipulating psychological horror. Best avoided. A fantastic cross section of the very best of PKD from humble beginnings through his most copious phase of writing. Wonderfully self contained, introspective studies; science fiction settings but never science fiction action - instead, a carefully crafted series of prose which all question the very nature of our being, a subject that PKD kept returning to time and time again through his life. A great introduction for a reader with little exposure to the longer books, the fact that "Minority Report", "Total Recall" and the like are in there in their original short form alone makes it a great read. ******
