About book Seeing Cinderella (2012)

I loved Seeing Cinderella, it's my new favorite book. It pulled me right into Callie's crazy life, it's her 1st year of middle school, her parents are keeping something from her and her new glasses gave her something powerful you never could imagine. Her best friend, Ellen has not been her normal self and her new neighbor has something to hide. But with a little help from Callie's new power and new friends she might put all the puzzle pieces together. "Pacificview Middle School reminded me of a science experiment gone wrong. A maze of gray metal lockers snaked in all directions, making me feel like a lost lab rat." Callie is starting middle school with the usual concerns. Her parents are separated again. Then, to top it off, she has to get glasses. As if being called "Polka Dot" because of her freckles isn't bad enough, now they'll have something else to tease her about. But at least she has her BFF, Ellen. Ellen wants to do the whole middle school experience: clubs, boyfriends, etc. She even signs Callie up for drama without telling her. But that's okay, right? Because they're best friends. When she visited the very unusual Dr. Ingram to get her glasses, the pair she picks out has to be ordered. So, Dr. Ingram gives her a "loaner" pair - completely ugly - and tells her to "use them wisely." She discovers quickly that these glasses allow her to see what everyone else is thinking. And it is an eye-opening experience.A little predictable, but a good message for students to hear: "No matter how different we looked on the outside, on the inside we worried and wondered about the same things. We all hoped we'd find someone who would see us for the person we really were and the person we wanted to be."
