About book Secret Life Of The Grown-Up Brain: The Surprising Talents Of The Middle-Aged Mind (2010)

Call # 616.89 STRAUCH B Rebecca's rating - 4 starsThink middle age is the beginning of a mental meltdown? Think again. Strauch gives hope that with with the right mix of exercise, diet and mindful stretching you can stave off dementia, Alzheimer's and other mental maladies. At first, I was a little turned off by some of the fluffy anectdotes that Strauch used to illustrate the latest science on the aging brain. I was thinking "Just the facts, ma'am!" But within a chapter or two she really hits her stride giving you just the right mix of anecdote and hard science. I learned a lot about my brain. This is a very hopeful read, and almost a must-read for anyone in their 40s, 50s or 60s. This is an enlightening, positive book. You find out many interesting things about how brains age and how it is studied. With the fMRI scans now available this area of brain study is expanding quickly. Barbara Stauch writes in a very approachable way for the lay man. She uses solid examples in real life to explain complex ideas and theories. Anyone interested in how our thought process change and mature with age should read this.
