It took me longer than usual to finish this book. I think maybe I just wasn't interested in reading a book that I had already read, but with a different narrator (or two). It's not that I don't appreciate reading about Wyn's back story or Ilyan's love for Joclyn, but I was looking forward to reading from Joclyn's POV after she got out of that mind-trap at the end of Eyes of Ember. So I wasn't totally enthralled until the end of Scorched Treachery, when Joclyn woke and saved Wyn. That was the best part! There's one thing that's been bothering me, though. How the fuck is every one still acting like Joclyn and Ryland love each other? Ryland has tried to kill her on several occasions, and when he's not he's being totally creepy. Joclyn has been through hell and back, and who's been there for her? Not Ryland. All of her experiences with him since the first book have been negative. It's about damn time that she realizes that Ilyan is a much better option for her. Speaking of Ilyan... every time he touches Jos or thinks about kissing her, he reminds himself that she's "not his," or something like that. Which implies that she's Ryland's. As if she belongs to him? She doesn't belong to any one, but if she were to belong to any one it would be Ilyan. They're freaking fated to love each other! Ryland and Joclyn were never really together and even if they were, they definitely shouldn't be now! So why shouldn't Ilyan want to kiss her? But I guess that's Good Guy Ilyan, always being selfless. Ugh, I just want him to be happy. A lot of this book was tedious to me. Several pages devoted to torture descriptions and digging out of caves, I skimmed until I got about 2/3rds of the way in and things got interesting again. This book, however, continues to be true to the rules set for its world, which is something a lot of fantasy authors struggle with and I have to admire. Plus, I was gripped by the last third of the book as it unwound a few more secrets.
