Overall, I think I liked this book better than the first one - which was partly because I already knew the characters. However, I didn't like how some of the plots were handled. Constant re-hashing of feelings from the first one got annoying and I don't think Lola's and Max's story lines were dealt with in adequate depth or had a fulfilling conclusion. And the book just seemed to suddenly end? Is there a third book in this series? Because that was weird. A lot of writers have tropes they go back to - but not all writers are skillful enough to make them feel fresh or give them twists so you don't feel like you're reading the same books over and over.Sometimes when you read sequels to books that were good, it's painfully obvious the author only had enough idea for one story. But pretty much universally, Maureen Johnson writes sequels that are as good or better than the originals. And her originals are great. She's just very talented at using the sequels to develop the characters, which makes me want to keep reading more about them. I felt this way about the Scarlett books - her characters are really rich and three dimensional and they are very imperfect, even her main characters. They lie and do things for reasons they are unsure of while still being likeable. They are people. Her books do tend to cliffhanger a bit, which is great when there's a sequel waiting to be downloaded - but it looks like I'll have to wait for more in this series. I do hope she writes more - I need to know what happens next!I guess when you binge read an author it's easy to draw comparisons to previous works. But I have to say I am so enjoying bingereading Maureen Johnson. I guess that's obvious since as soon as I finish one book, I go download another. At some point I'm going to run out of books and that will be sad.
