I perceive Les Filles du Roi differently after reading this book and have a newfound admiration for their contribution to building Quebec society. The author manages to combine history with an eventful story of the life of one of these women, Laure, and successfully pulls the reader in, wanting only to see her overcome the tremendous barriers and obstacles she faces. I would recommend this book to the reader who wants to see beyond the legends of Les Flles du Roi. This was a book club choice for the month. Otherwise I would not have finished it. Such a downer...not why I read. I like to be entertained and refreshed from a book. Historical fiction doesn't cut it with me.That said, the book moved right along and was a rather quick read. I kept hoping something good would happen to the main character, but it never did. What a sad life some authors can dream up!
