About book Sailor Twain: Or: The Mermaid In The Hudson (2012)
It was a rainy morning in early spring when I sauntered over to the local coffee shop with my copy of Sailor Twain and sat down with a latte to begin reading. Some books transport you to their settings and moods, this book seemed to transmute its setting and mood into my reality. It is mercilessly beautiful and mysterious; utterly pleasurable to read and gaze it. I fell for its charms--- hook, line, and sinker. Victorian mermaids with a bent towards literature and folklore. I was predisposed to adore this from the outset, but what I got was so much MORE than I expected. There are graphic novels then there's Sailor Twain. A tale told in simple, almost childish art with the intensity of a great literary novel. Could not put this down.I loved the characters, the story and the world in which this is set. The only reason this did not get 5 stars, and believe me I was incredibly tempted, was the somewhat unclear ending. I struggled with trying to grasp the moral and exact meaning of the ending. It seems to be the Anti-Disney great mermaid story with bite and a somewhat tragic conclusion. This should definitely be filmed, its haunting, beautiful and an absolute must own for any mermaid enthusiast. Restores one's faith in graphic novels, showing they can be so much more than just super heroes.

A beautifully illustrated and haunting graphic novel, but the ending left me slightly baffled.
