About book Saga #1 (2012)

This is a pretty prime example of what I don't like about graphic novels: too many naked or half-naked girls; cliched plot; and shallow characters. This book was especially odd as well. There were a lot of different kinds of creatures and robots and stuff like that, but there was virtually no world-building to contextualize anything. The characters were mostly archetypes, and I found the illustrations unremarkable. Very similar to Daughter of Smoke and Bone, which doesn't surprise me, because Laini Taylor got her start with graphic novels and illustrated stories, and her writing possesses two of the above negative characteristics I mentioned. I'm not going to bother with the rest of the series. As it was, I picked this up one night because I had nothing to read over dinner. So this was the first graphic novel I've read in years (think the last ones were Tintins when I was in my early teens) and I really enjoyed it! Very cool graphics and the story was interesting and made me laugh - I especially liked that it wasn't PG but there was loads of swearing, violence, sex and nudity which I'm not used to at all in graphic novels. Definitely kept me interested and will continue with the series.
